An arrest has been made for the theft of a van full of show dogs earlier this month, and one man is still at large. The van was stolen June 6th from the parking lot of In-N-Out Burger in Redding. It contained 14 purebred champion bloodline dogs on their way to a dog show in the Bay Area. The van was left unattended for a few minutes, and it was left running so the air conditioning would keep the dogs comfortable. After it was stolen, the various owners of the dogs built a reward fund of $30,000. At 10:30AM the following morning a tip brought police to a wooded area off Canyon Road about a half-mile from Highway 273. That’s where the van was abandoned with all the dogs inside. They were hot and thirsty but they were apparently alright. Since then, RPD Investigators have reviewed surveillance video from In-N-Out and identified two suspects. Arrest warrants were acquired and Thursday afternoon 41-year-old Benjamin David Larson was captured. He’s on parole and has an extensive criminal history. He’s been booked on vehicle theft, along with 14 counts of animal cruelty. Still wanted is 28-year-old Billy Jo Patterson. He’s a white man, 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair, likely shaved or very short.
