The extreme heat makes firefighting conditions excruciating, but crews are doing well against some fires in remote areas to the northeast. Three lightning-sparked fires in Lassen County are all 70% contained, including one that’s burned 56 acres east of Fall River Mills, another that’s burned 89 acres north of Little Valley, and another that’s burned 32 acres southeast of Bieber. The Eagle Fire has scorched 2100 acres of shrubs and grassland in Southeastern Modoc County near the Nevada State Line. It’s 67% contained. The Steamboat Fire southeast of Montague in the Shasta Valley Wildlife Area of Siskiyou County is 80% contained after burning 224 acres. The Klamathon Fire north of Hornbrook on the Oregon border is fully contained after burning just over 3800 acres and 82 structures, and killing one man. There are 31 active fires burning in Modoc National Forest, though most are very small. Fire officials are looking closely for new starts that may be smoldering from lightning strikes.
