I-5 Open After Asphalt Trailer Dumps Load In Lanes

Northbound Interstate Five was a mess in the O’brien area at Lake Shasta overnight. Just after 11 O’clock, a big rig hauling asphalt hit a bump and his trailer came open, dumping a significant amount of the sticky material onto the freeway lanes. It was apparently in both lanes and several hundred feet long. Cal-Trans sweepers were ineffective so a loader had to be brought to the scene to scrape it up. The CHP used traffic breaks to ease small groups of vehicles through during the cleanup process. The road was clear a little after 3 O’clock Wednesday morning. At around the same time as the asphalt dump and several miles to the north, a fully loaded car hauler was in the southbound lanes when it struck a bear. The animal became wedged beneath the big rig and broke some components, disabling the truck.
