As firefighting operations wind down on the Klamathon Fire in Northern Siskiyou County, Cal-Fire says a local assistance center will open next Monday in the Hornbrook Area. The fire started July 5th and burned just over 3800 acres and 82 structures. It also killed a man who was caught in the quickly approaching flames. The Steamboat Fire southeast of Montague in the Shasta Valley Wildlife Area is 90% contained after burning 224 acres. A new fire broke out Tuesday near Big Springs north of Weed. The Lott Fire is a little over 10 acres and prompted evacuations. Forward progress has been stopped, the fire is 50% contained and evacuations have been lifted. There are two dozen lightning fires in the Klamath National Forest, all of them less than a half-acre. A few lightning fires are burning in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest as well, mostly just single trees. The remote lightning fires are largely being handled by smokejumpers. The Lassen County lightning fires are mostly contained. There are 31 active fires burning in Modoc National Forest, with the largest of the new starts at 60 acres. The 2100 acre Eagle Fire burning in shrublands south of Cedarville is 90% contained. Fire officials are looking closely for new starts that may be smoldering from lightning strikes.
