Industrial Fire In Corning Forces Evacuations

Evacuations are in place in Corning as crews overnight battled a large industrial fire at a recycling and manufacturing plant. The blaze broke out a little after 9 O’clock Wednesday night at Specialized Fibers at Kirkwood Road and South Avenue. The stubborn fire has prompted evacuations for a number of homes and businesses in the area and those evacuations are expected to last at least throughout the day because of the possible toxicity of the smoke. The fire also led PG&E to cut electricity to about 1500 PG&E customers. At the peak the outage affected more than 8,000 customers.
