P G & E Works to Reduce Hazards

As evacuated residents eagerly await the OK to return home, two of the major items on the safety checklist involve securing electric lines and natural gas lines. Outside Redding city limits those are both handled by PG&E, and gas in Redding is also PG&E. The private utility says they have 743 workers and contractors on site, with more on the way. The 63 crews are also assisting Redding Electric Utility. PG&E says they’ve assessed more than 80% of their equipment in the fire area and identified damage to 1,211 locations. Nearly 3,000 PG&E customers are affected. People who shut off their gas prior to evacuating are being told not to turn it back on themselves, but to call PG&E at (800) 743-5000 for a free safety inspection, gas restoration and pilot lighting. Anyone who smells the distinctive rotten egg smell of natural gas should call 9-1-1.
