Homeland Security Secretary: Devastation Of Carr Fire “Truly Heartbreaking”

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen asked residents to prepare for future emergencies and thanked firefighters and other personnel battling the Carr Fire. Nielsen spoke to reporters Friday at the Carr Fire Incident Command Center at the fairgrounds in Anderson. Nielsen said she saw “truly heartbreaking” scenes of homes reduced to ash and fences replaced with caution tape. She said it looked like “a scene from a devastating adventure movie”. She added that she was humbled to see how neighbors were helping neighbors. That’s a phrase that was often used by Redding Fire Chief Gerry Gray when describing the mutual aid system. There was a Univision reporter at the briefing who asked if undocumented immigrants should be afraid to go to evacuation centers or to seek emergency relief. Nielsen said they should not be afraid, but she gave no guarantee that they would not be detained. Both FEMA and ICE are administered by the Department of Homeland Security. FEMA will be providing 75% reimbursement for many infrastructure repairs and civilians can apply for a number of programs, including temporary housing that could come in the form of travel trailers and mobile homes. Several agencies, including FEMA and the State OES, have temporarily set up shop in the old K-Mart building on Hilltop Drive. A visit is planned on Monday by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue.
