A fast moving fire in the Summit City Area of Shasta Lake Tuesday was stopped for two main reasons: an aggressive attack by firefighters and the fact that residents had done a great job of clearing defensible space around their homes, according to Cal-Fire Unit Chief and Shasta County Fire Chief Mike Hebrard. The initial attack involved 4 air tankers, 3 helicopters, 2 dozers, several hand crews and at least 20 fire engines from various agencies. The fire started near Ranchera Road and Hill Boulevard a little before 3 O’clock. A number of evacuations were issued, and they were followed in an orderly manner. Forward progress was stopped a little before 4:30PM after the fire had scorched around 20 acres. One home was heavily damaged and two other structures were destroyed, according to Cal-Fire, but without the defensible space work, it could have been a disaster.
