Crews Nearly Contain 60-Thousand Acre Delta Fire

Containment of the Delta Fire is now at 92%, with full containment still predicted for Saturday. The northern edge and the western edge are contained and Wednesday crews near Sims Flat closed the final control line gap on the eastern edge, most of which is butted up to the Hirz Fire. That leaves the southern edge of the fire, where crews battled red flag conditions Thursday but still managed to keep the fire from growing beyond it’s size of 60,702 acres. 17 homes have been lost. Suppression repair is underway to prevent erosion when the rains eventually fall. Pockets of unburned vegetation continue to flare up inside the perimeter. There are no restrictions on Interstate Five. All mandatory evacuations have been lifted, though some roads are open only to residents. The McCloud Arm of Lake Shasta is reopened for boating. Castle Crags State Park has also reopened.
