Former CHP Officer Faces 1 Year In Jail

A former CHP Officer has pleaded guilty to several charges involving beating up his girlfriend and lewd acts on a child. Matthew Schmidt was arrested in 2016 for domestic violence after allegedly punching his girlfriend in the face. He was a California Highway Patrol Officer in Modoc County at the time, and was a resident of Palo Cedro. He also is accused of groping and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl at her Alturas home in 2013. On Tuesday Schmidt’s trial was about to begin when he entered guilty pleas to felony domestic violence, misdemeanor battery, and violation of a court order to stay away from the victim. He was remanded into custody without bail until his sentencing, when he’ll likely be given a maximum of one year in jail.
