The Forest Service is continuing a round-up of wild horses in Modoc County. The goal is to gather as many as a thousand of the Wild Mustangs from the Devil’s Garden Plateau. 66 horses were gathered Wednesday and another 28 were captured Thursday from a location north of Big Sage Reservoir. The round-up will continue again Friday. Critics of the practice have tried to stop it out of concern that the horses could be bought by people intending to sell them for slaughter. The horses are being sold for as little as $1 each. Slaughtering horses for human consumption is illegal in the United States, but it’s not illegal to export them to countries where horse meat processing is legal.
