CHP: Driver Falls Asleep, Nearly Strikes Officer

A driver got a lucky break early Tuesday morning. At approximately 3:40AM, Red Bluff CHP Officers were conducting a DUI investigation on the southbound shoulder of I-5, just south of Tehama Avenue. At the same time, a 2006 Ford sedan traveling north on I-5, crossed the center median and both southbound lanes nearly colliding head on with another vehicle traveling southbound and the CHP Officers who were on the southbound shoulder. No one was injured. It was later determined that the driver had fallen asleep behind the wheel. Ironically, this is “Drowsy Driving Prevention Week”. Cal-Trans is using the electronic signs along highways to raise awareness of the dangers of drowsy driving. Almost 900 signs across the state will display the message “Feel Drowsy? Exit And Rest.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states going without sleep for at least 18 hours is the same as having a blood alcohol content of .05 percent.
