Volunteers Needed To Prepare Damaged School For Winter

Many thousands of people who grew up in Shasta County have fond memories of Whiskeytown Environmental School, which has been attended by most public school children in the county. The Carr Fire left the camp in extreme peril, prompting the County Office of Education to cancel future use of the camp for sleepovers as it had been used. The possibility of debris, logs and boulders tumbling down the hill and crushing the cabins is a chance that can’t be risked. Now the National Park Service wants help in fortifying the camp before the rainy season begins. Many volunteers are needed to fill and place sandbags in order to create a protective wall uphill of the camp. The work session is this Saturday from 9AM to Noon. Volunteers should bring gloves, water and lunch. Everything else will be provided.
