With the rainy season here, the Forest Service is trying to catch woody debris from the area surrounding Lake Shasta. A boom has been placed on the shoreline near the Charlie Creek Railroad Trestle near Lakeshore to capture potential woody debris flows from the Delta and Hirz Fires. The plan is to mitigate boating safety issues and reduce the impact at the boat launches. A similar boom will be placed near Dekkas Rock on the McCloud Arm. Crews intend to capture the debris, then eventually haul it to Gregory Beach where it would be available as firewood. A similar operation was implemented, as a result of the Bagley Fire in 2012. Crews don’t plan to leave the booms up for an extended length of time, but it depends on storm activity and lake levels.
