Suspected Bank Thief Arrested In Arcata

A man arrested for a Washington State bank robbery may also have robbed a bank a week ago in Redding. At 5:30PM last Thursday a man walked into the Chase Bank in the Mount Shasta Mall parking lot and passed a note to a teller demanding money. He claimed to have a gun but no weapon was seen. A search was done but the robber got away. Surveillance photos looked strikingly similar to a robber caught on camera at a U.S. Bank in Bremerton, Washington on January 9th. When the Bremerton photos were released to the public, police got numerous tips, some of them pointing to 48-year-old Kelly Burns. The F.B.I. got involved and Burns was linked to another robbery in Covington, Washington in October of last year, as well as last Thursday’s robbery in Redding. He was apparently wearing the same jacket in all the heists. An arrest warrant was obtained and Burns was located and arrested by Arcata Police Tuesday night.
