Update: Coroner ID’s Man Who Was Shot & Killed In Centerville

A murder victim from Centerville has been identified by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office as 69-year-old Richard Westley Maxion. Tuesday night, 30-year-old Kody James Smith reportedly called 911 to say he had shot a man and two dogs at a home on Equestrian Drive off Placer Road west of Redding. Arriving deputies detained Smith and found Maxion in the living room with his two dead dogs. Maxion was taken to a hospital, but died of the apparent gunshot wounds. The sheriff’s office says Smith had been living at the home for about 2 months. He was booked into jail for murder.
