A Mount Shasta man was killed when his vehicle hit a tree on Northbound I-5, south of the Grenada Irrigation District Overpass in Siskiyou County. While Redding area highways were relatively problem free Thursday, icy roads caused numerous accidents up north with temperatures in the teens. Among the crashes was a 1998 Ford Explorer found in a ditch against a tree. The 81-year-old driver, a man from Mount Shasta, was located deceased in the vehicle. The passengers, 78-year-old twin sisters from Mount Shasta were transported to Mercy Medical Center Mount Shasta for major injuries. The accidents started happening around 7:15AM when an F-250 pickup with a cab-over camper overturned on I-5 north, south of Grenada. The driver received major injuries and was taken to Fairchild Medical Center. Grenada Fire Protection District had responded to assist and parked their GMC 3500 rescue-type rig on the freeway shoulder. Fire crew members were assisting with the patient when a big rig with trailer slid out of control toward the scene. The right side of the big rig’s sleeper berth area struck the left rear of the fire rescue truck. The truck was pushed down an embankment and overturned. The big rig slid into the center divider and came to a stop, blocking both northbound lanes. 50 to 60 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the center divider. The driver of the big rig was not injured in the collision. The Yreka CHP Office reported 16 collisions over a four hour period.
