Group Expected To Announce New Sales Tax Measure

A community group will soon be announcing an effort to get a sales tax measure before the voters of Redding. Previous measures have failed, including a quarter-cent tax and a half-cent tax. This time, backers will be pushing a full one percent tax. It will have a lower threshold needed for approval, though. Special taxes, such as one that’s earmarked for public safety, needs a two-thirds vote to pass. The newest proposal would be for a general tax, which needs only a simple majority. The proposal has not been officially announced, but at Tuesday’s Shasta County Board of Supervisors meeting, the board voted to dissolve an ad committee that was going to study a county-wide tax after Supervisor Joe Chimenti said he heard that Redding was going to vote on it’s own tax.
