Horbnrook Man Convicted Of Child Molestation Walks Free

A Hornbrook man once imprisoned for life for child molestation has walked free on technicalities due to errors made by the prosecution and the court, according to the Siskiyou Daily News. 52-year-old Shawn Young was acquitted by a Siskiyou County jury on Friday on six charges related to the molestation of three young girls. Young was convicted in 2014 and sentenced to life in prison. The conviction was overturned in November of 2017 by the California Court of Appeals because a juror had been dismissed without the defendant or his counsel present. They also found that two witnesses were allowed to testify to their opinion about the credibility of the girls’ testimony, to which the defense should have objected. That forced a retrial, but the case against Young had changed significantly because, according to Siskiyou County D.A. Kirk Andrus, a disgraced former officer who is no longer in law enforcement was the only witness to many of the original statements by the children when they described their abuse. The children, two of whom are Young’s daughters, were re-interviewed last year but that was five years after the original statements and they had since been trying to move on and forget about the ordeal, so the statements were much different than the original testimony. Young had been behind bars since his arrest in September of 2013. On Friday he walked away completely free.
