Mattress Fire Quickly Extinguished At Market Street Manor

Quick action by neighbors in a downtown motel kept a fire from becoming a very bad situation, according to Redding Fire Department. Around 4:15PM Thursday afternoon, firefighters were called to the Market Street Manor. They arrived to find light smoke coming out of an upstairs unit. A mattress had caught fire, but other tenants noticed it and extinguished it quickly, preventing any fire damage to the building itself. One person was transported to Mercy Hospital for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There are 28 occupants of the motel, most of them semi-permanent residents.
