Update: Officers Use Tear Gas, Standoff Suspect In Custody

An armed standoff ended without injury in an East Redding neighborhood Friday. Melissa Danyeur lives on Oxford Road just south of Oakdale Lane. She told us that her nephew, who also lives at the house, asked if his friend Matthew Finley could sleep on the couch for the night. She said he could, and she went to bed before he arrived. At some point overnight the back sliding glass door shattered. Melissa called 9-1-1 thinking that someone on the outside had thrown a rock at the glass but after hanging up it was discovered that Finley was armed with a gun and he had apparently shot out the glass door. He was apparently making strange paranoid statements and he still had the gun, so Melissa gathered her family and her dog and fled the home. The ensuing standoff lasted several hours and shots could be heard being fired in the house several times. Redding Police set up a large response on Oxford Road with a mobile command unit, an armored vehicle, the bomb squad robot, drone surveillance, a SWAT team and negotiators. Most of the neighboring residents were evacuated, while others were told to shelter in place. Finally at around Noon, officers fired multiple tear gas canisters into the house and Finley was forced to come outside and surrender. He was then taken into custody without further incident.
