500-Thousand Salmon Smolts Released Into Feather River

Last week, 360,000 young fish from Coleman Fish Hatchery were released, half near Chico and half directly from Coleman. This week, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife released more than 500,000 Spring Run Chinook Salmon Smolts into the Feather River.Six Hundred of the finger-long Salmon were implanted with acoustic tags, which will help biologists track them on their downstream journey to the Pacific Ocean. The young fish were reared at the Feather River Hatchery near Oroville. They’ll become part of the ongoing effort to track the in-river survival rates. Feather River Hatchery will raise and release more than 1.4 Million Feather River Spring Run Smolts this year.
