The Redding Fire Department is hoping they don’t have a serial arsonist on their hands following a series of intentional fires in East Redding. On Monday somebody lit five separate fires, including one that damaged a building at the Hope Baptist Church on Churn Creek Road, causing about $25,000 damage. Another fire on the property had burned itself out. There was also a small vegetation fire in the area of the Loma Vista overpass. Two more fires were lit in the neighborhood across the freeway on Monday, including some debris in the street at Ricardo Avenue and Estate Street and a flag at a house on El Portal. Wednesday evening a pile of debris was torched at the corner of Regal and Hartnell. On Thursday afternoon shortly before 4 O’clock someone set fire to the contents of a shopping cart off of Downard Lane east of Churn Creek Road. Redding Fire Marshal Craig Wittner says that with Summer on the way, it’s vital that the series of fires don’t escalate. Anyone with information about the fires, or who has seen suspicious behavior, is urged to call Wittner at 225-4141.
