A frog considered to be in danger will curtail Trout stocking in some area back country waters this summer. In 2017, the “Cascades Frog” was placed on a list of candidates under the California Endangered Species Act. During the candidacy review process, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is obligated to protect the species from take, including protection from introduced fish. Planted Trout are native in the affected waters. 41 back country locations primarily in Siskiyou and Trinity Counties now known to support Cascades Frogs will not be stocked with Trout in 2019. An additional 19 locations will not be stocked until CDFW can conduct a visual inspection to determine the presence of frogs. CDFW will continue to stock Trout in 146 locations throughout the northern region, encompassing Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, Trinity, Del Norte, Humboldt, Lassen, Mendocino, and Modoc Counties.
