Firefighters Forced To Use Backhoe While Extinguishing Early Morning Fire

An East Redding house fire early Monday morning was made much more difficult due to a very large volume of stuff accumulated by the residents. Redding Fire Department had to call in a backhoe from city public works so they could drag the mass of materials out of the garage. Redding Battalion Chief Mike Sawyer said the fire on Hawn Avenue drew all but two of the city’s engines. No people were hurt in the fire, but four cats are missing. The value of the damage to the house is estimated at $100,000 and damage to the contents estimated at $50,000. The cause is still being investigated.
