Woman Found Guilty Of Murder For Fatal 2017 DUI Crash

A 27-year-old woman could spend the rest of her life in prison after being convicted of murder Thursday for causing the deaths of two people in a DUI crash in East Redding. The collision happened at 12:35AM on November 3rd of 2017 at the corner of Hartnell and Churn Creek. Kendra Andersen-Schwegerl was driving a Ford Freestyle on Churn Rreek Road at more than 100 miles an hour and straddling both southbound lanes. At the Hartnell intersection the light was red and she plowed into the rear of a Toyota Corolla containing five people. 19-year-old Erica Young and 18-year-old Lacy Mae Jackson were killed. Clifford Bailey, Daisy Reece and Ralph Sorrell suffered major injuries. Andersen-Schwegerl had only minor injuries. There were open containers of alcohol in her SUV and she had a blood alcohol level of .254, more than 3 times the legal limit. She had just left a bar where a friend had told her not to drive and offered her a ride home, but she refused. She had been drinking beer in her car and at two different bars during the previous three hours. On Thursday Andersen-Schwegerl was found guilty by a jury of two counts of second degree murder and other charges. When she’s sentenced next month, she could get 40 years to life in prison. The victims were from Hoopa, and a large group of Hoopa residents traveled to Redding more than once to march in the area of the crash to bring the message that they hadn’t forgotten the lives of the two young women taken from their community.
