Tehama County Ends Outdoor Burning, Shasta County Extends Burning In Higher Elevations

All burn permits have been suspended for the Cal-Fire Tehama-Glenn Unit, but the season has been extended for higher elevations in the Shasta-Trinity Unit. The Tehama County ban begins July 1st and includes burning any materials at any elevation, including the Eastern Tehama County communities of Mineral, Mill Creek, and everywhere else in the Cal-Fire responsibility area. Since the start of the year Cal-Fire has responded to more than 1500 wildfires around the state. In the Shasta-Trinity Unit, officials say the wet Winter and mild temperatures have kept fuel moisture levels high, allowing for an extension of the season beyond the end of June, but only for areas above 1,000 feet. A permit needs to be acquired from Cal-Fire and in hand while burning. Cal-Fire Unit Chief Bbrett Govea will decide when weather conditions warrant a suspension. There’s a total ban on burning below the 1,000 foot elevation. Residents are urged to find ways to clear at least 100 feet of defensible space around their homes without the use of metal bladed tools.
