A local group opposed to the plan to build a new casino is encouraging people to address the Redding City Council… even though there’s nothing on the agenda. The group, called “Speak Up Shasta”, has been active on social media, urging the public to show up at Tuesday night’s council meeting to express their opposition to the relocation and expansion of Win-River Casino. However, the council agenda doesn’t include any discussion of the proposal. Speakers would only be able to speak during public comment periods.
Redding Rancheria wants to build a new facility in an area in south Redding near the Bechlli/South Bonnyview interchange. It would include a casino, hotel, retail space and an event center. Opponents have expressed concerns about traffic, increased costs to local government and environmental concerns. A full page ad in Sunday’s Record Searchlight echoed the group’s concerns, but it’s unknown who paid for the ad. The purchaser was not identified. It was also not labeled as an advertisement.
