A fire at a business in South Redding was stopped before it reached a massive source of fuel. At around 3 O’clock Tuesday afternoon Redding Fire Department was called to American Self Storage and Business Park on Westside Road. It houses several businesses, including Cal’s Books and a document shredding business. Smoke was coming from the shredder service, and firefighters had to use a saw to get the roll-up door open. That took about 20 minutes, according to Redding Fire Battalion Chief Eric McMurtry. When they got inside crews stopped the fire before it reached tons of stacked paper files that were waiting to be destroyed. It was at first believed to have originated in a swamp cooler but it was later determined to have come from a portable electric blower that had been used in the parking lot. The value of the damage is estimated at $45,000 for the building and another $35,000 for contents. The business is located right next door to Cal’s Books, a long established used bookstore, but thanks to the cinder block walls, Cal’s was not affected by the fire beyond some minor smoke damage.
