Update: Supervisors Delay Vote On Defensible Space Ordiance

The Shasta County Board of Supervisors has delayed approval of an ordinance that would require defensible space against fires. The law would require the clearing of vegetation at least 100 feet around structures and 30 feet along the property line if the neighbor’s structure is less than 100 feet from the line. Failure to establish defensible space could eventually result in a misdemeanor charge and the county could declare a fire hazard and public nuisance subject to abatement. In such a case, the county could cut the defensible space and bill the property owner for the costs. The board heard a lot of comments and decided to wait until next month to put it to a vote, giving property owners time to meet the requirements before the law goes into effect.
