The Latest: Drowning Victim Identified

A man who apparently drowned in Lake Shasta on Sunday has been identified by the Shasta County Coroners Office. 45-year-old Somsanith Ricky Phuthama was fishing with three other men in a boat when they ran out of gas at Packers Point. After floating for a while they were getting hot, so Phuthama and two others jumped in for a swim. Phuthama was struggling to stay afloat and the others tried to help him but he pushed them away in his panic and eventually went underwater and did not resurface. The Shasta County Dive Team tried to locate Phuthama’s body Sunday afternoon, and again Monday with the aid of an underwater robot. A member of the dive team had to be hospitalized Monday due to a dive-related injury. Tuesday afternoon Phuthama’s body was finally found about 79 feet deep. His family has been notified.
