It appears that the runoff election for the State Assembly First District seat will be between the two women in the race, Republican Megan Dahle and Democrat Elizabeth Betancourt. By the latest count, Betancourt holds a districtwide lead with 39%, followed closely by Dahle with 36%. Patrick Jones showed a strong third place with 17%, but he’s out of the race. He had the most votes in Shasta County but in the rest of the district his showing was much lower. Joe Turner got 5.6% and Lane Rickard got 2%. There are still provisional, mailed-in and dropped-off ballots to be counted, but it’s almost certain that Betancourt and Dahle will be the two names on the ballot on November 5th. Betancourt did very well in some southern counties while Dahle ruled in the north. She’s from Lassen County and is the wife of Brian Dahle, who vacated the Assembly seat when he was elected to the State Senate. Dahle raised around $200,000 in campaign contributions, while Jones reported $65,000 and Betancourt’s campaign raised $49,000. 40% of registered voters in the district are Republicans, while 28% are Democrats and 22% decline to state.
