Shasta County ranks second in the state for the per capita rate of babies born with opioid influence, with 19-point-7 cases per 1,000 births. Trinity ranks number one with 22-point-5 per 1,000. Last year 186,352 prescriptions for opioids were written in Shasta County. An award winning documentary about opioid addiction will be shown Thursday evening at the Cascade Theatre. “Written Off” examines the life of a user and challenges the stigma and shame that follows addiction. After the screening, a panel of experts will discuss opioid addiction in Shasta County and the barriers to solutions. There’s no charge for the event, which runs from 6 to 9.
