Thursday Fire Update

Firefighters working the various fires burning around the northstate have had a break in the weather, but they’re preparing for potential trouble as hotter dryer conditions are expected over the next few days.

No further growth has been reported on the Red Bank Fire, which started by lightning last week off Hammer Loop Road and Petty John Road west of Red Bluff. It’s still estimated at 8,838 acres, now with 90% containment. Two structures have been destroyed.

The South Fire flared up and produced a lot of smoke Wednesday as it grew by a few hundred acres. There’s still a lot of exposure on the perimeter. The fire is burning on federal land west of the Red Bank fire 15 miles south of Platina. It’s now 3,185 acres with 20% containment.

The Henthorne Fire 15 miles northeast of Covelo remains at 244 acres and is 65% contained.

The Forest Service is making good progress on the 20 or so fires in the Trinity River Management Unit, with the 280 acre Rams Horn Fire between Highway 3 and Castle Crags now at 100% containment, and no growth reported on the 357 acre Middle Fire northeast of the Canyon Creek Trailhead

The 40 fires in the Klamath National Forest have also not grown by much, with the 1,862 acre Lime Fire near Happy Camp now 25% contained and the 161 acre Kidder 2 fire near Cottonwood Peak now 32% contained.

The Walker fire in Plumas National Forest 11 miles east of Taylorsville has grown slightly, now at 49,272 acres with 28% containment.
