Man Could Serve Life In Prison After Killing His Young Child

A McCloud man has reached a plea deal that’ll put him in prison for killing his baby boy last year, according to the Siskiyou Daily News. Last November, 4-month-old Ezra Proffitt died shortly after arriving at Mercy Medical Center Mount Shasta. He was brought to the hospital by his father, 27-year-old Joshua James Proffitt, who said the baby was sick. There were no obvious signs of abuse or indications of foul play until the baby died and was examined by a forensic pathologist. Trauma found during the autopsy was not consistent with illness, and contradicted information given by the parents. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma. Sheriff’s detectives questioned the parents at their home in McCloud and arrested Joshua. He had been responsible for the infant while his wife was at work. He became frustrated by the baby crying and squeezed his throat, then struck him three times hard in the abdomen with his knee. Little Ezra then stopped breathing. Joshua has entered a no contest plea to second degree murder and he’ll be given a sentence of 15 years to life in state prison. He’ll have to serve a minimum of 15 years before being considered for parole.
