Neighbor Reports 50 Dead Deer, Threats To Forest Service Employee At Marijuana Grow

A Trinity County man says there was a lot more to the story of a marijuana bust than was revealed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office press release. A federal grand jury has indicted four men for a 1000 plant growing operation near Tomhead Mountain. The defendants include a man from Pioneer, a man from Guatemala and two from Mexico. In addition to cultivation, the men are also charged with depredation of public lands. A nearby resident tells us that more than 50 deer carcasses were found at the site, along with a huge amount of trash and, most concerning, Carbofuran, a dangerous neurotoxin that’s banned in the U.S. for it’s devastating effects on wildlife and contaminating effects on water and soil. The neighbor we spoke to also said the growers had threatened other property owners and used poison to kill a dog belonging to the Forest Service employee manning the Tomhead fire lookout. He then quit out of fear, leaving the lookout unoccupied for the season. If convicted, the charges would bring a mandatory minimum of ten years and up to life in federal prison.
