Citizen Committee Will Meet On Solar Energy

A committee has been formed to answer some questions the Redding City Council has concerning solar electricity and what Redding Electric Utility’s obligations might be. Solar customers who generate more power than they use are paid when their meters run backwards and electricity runs back into the system. It’s called “net metering”. The city is no longer obligated to pay solar customers at the same rate as REU charges electricity users. They could be paid at a much lower rate. Many people with solar panels already have signed 30 year contracts with the city. The council asked for a committee to be put together to look into the issue and report back to the council. The ad hoc citizens committee has its first meeting on Monday at 3 O’clock in the council chambers at city hall. The public is welcome to attend.
