Fisherman Reportedly Drowns At Black Butte Lake

The body of a 57-year-old corning man has been recovered from Black Butte Lake, according to the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were called on Saturday at about 8:40PM to check on a vehicle that was left running with the doors open and was parked at Angler Cove. Deputies determined the Ford Expedition belonged to Jose Rodriguez of Corning, but they were unable to locate him. His family reported that he had went fishing by himself and that he had not returned. With help from a CHP helicopter and Black Butte Lake Rangers, Rodriguez’s fishing boat was found unoccupied on the shore across from where his vehicle was parked. On Sunday morning deputies with the Tehama County Boating Safety Unit were called and began searching for Rodriguez. A sonar unit was used and Rodriguez’s body was found about 20 feet underwater. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Dive Team was called and recovered the body. Authorities believe that as Rodriguez was launching his boat, it began to float away, and he entered the water in an attempt to recover it. The incident is being investigated as an accidental drowning.
