Mayor Apologies For Atrocities Against Native Americans At State Of The City

Redding’s annual state of the city luncheon took an interesting twist. Attendees at a packed Civic Auditorium event Tuesday heard much of what’s become expected at the annual gathering…the positive side of Redding. Highlights included a reduction in crime, the rebuilding and recovering from last year’s Carr Fire and February’s snow storm, as well as new businesses coming to the city. Mayor Julie Winter included something unexpected when she apologized to Native Americans for the atrocities that have been committed on them. Several members of the local Native American community were on stage, including Jack Potter and Winnemem Wintu spiritual leader Caleen Sisk.
