RPD: Intoxicated Driver Crashes Into Power Pole In East Redding

Nearly 800 East Redding homes lost power Wednesday night after an allegedly intoxicated driver ran into a utility pole. When Redding Police arrived at Hartnell and Goodwater at 5:25PM, they found 29-year-old Marlon Lee Benson being held down by witnesses to prevent him from escaping. Benson had reportedly been driving a Chrysler 4-door that struck a vehicle driven by 57-year-old David Rothrock at the intersection of Hartnell and Shasta View. Rothrock was uninjured, but Benson apparently didn’t stick around to find out, fleeing eastbound until he tried to turn onto Goodwater and hit the pole. Live wires dropped to the ground and Benson reportedly tried to run away but was restrained. He refused sobriety tests and was taken for a blood draw before being booked into jail for DUI and hit and run. Power for all 790 affected REU customers was restored by Midnight.
