U.N. Recognizes Yurok Tribe For Efforts To Fight Climate Change

A far Northern California tribe has received an award from the United Nations. The Yurok Tribe is one of the first two indigenous nations in the U.S. to receive the U.M. Development Program’s “Equator Prize”. The prize is an acknowledgement of the tribe’s climate-change mitigation work, merging traditional ecological knowledge with western science to help restore forests. It acknowledges efforts to reduce poverty through environmentally sound projects. In addition to the recognition, each recipient received $10,000. The tribe resides along the Klamath River in Del Norte and Humboldt Counties and is the most-populous Native American nation in California.A large number of the tribe’s staff are involved in natural resources enhancement projects.
