Cigarette Sparks Deck Fire Saturday Afternoon

Wind is usually a very negative factor for firefighting, but it actually helped Saturday afternoon. Redding Fire Department responded at 1:45PM to a home on Tamarack Drive. They arrived to find a well involved fire burning a deck made of “Trex” type composite building material, with flames spreading to a tree overhanging the deck. The back of the attached house had significant heat damage, but a moderate north wind pushed the fire away from the house, preventing extension into the structure. The fire was under control in about 20 minutes. Damage is estimated at $14,000. The value of the house is almost $400,000. The 2 occupants of the house were uninjured. Investigator Mike Ham determined the cause to be an improperly discarded cigarette butt.
