The Latest: PG&E Cuts Power To Large Swath Of North State

At around 12:30AM Wednesday morning, most of Northern California went dark. PG&E has implemented a massive “public safety power shutoff” affecting nearly Two Million Californians. The utility set up a resource center at Shasta College at 8 O’clock Wednesday morning. Customers will be provided with information, water, charging stations and air conditioning. The National Weather Service has posted a red flag warning starting Wednesday morning with gusts from the north up to 50 miles an hour. The precautionary shutdown of electricity service, which is unprecedented in its scope, is a direct result of last year’s Camp Fire, caused by PG&E equipment failing during windy conditions. Customers of Redding Electric Utility and the City of Shasta Lake Electric Utility will not be subject to intentional shutoffs. The City of Anderson has no power and in unincorporated Shasta County many thousands are without power but some of the mountainous areas have been spared. Outages covering Palo Cedro, Bella Vista and countless other areas extend past Montgomery Creek and as far as Big Bend but not Burney or the Intermountain Area. Some areas around Shasta Lake City are affected and as far north as Mountain Gate. Some but not all areas around Shingletown are also in the dark. The most dangerous winds will likely be settled down by midday Thursday, but after the weather conditions improve, power cannot be restored until crews inspect equipment for potential damage.
