PG&E May Cut Power To 16 Counties Later This Week

PG&E is considering another public safety power shutoff this week, though it’s not likely to affect Shasta County. The utility announced Monday that electricity might be cut Wednesday to all or part of 16 counties. California’s utility regulator issued a series of sanctions against Pacific Gas and Electric for the last shut-off to more than 700,000 customers, which affected nearly 2 Million Californians. It was by far the largest intentional power cut in state history. The Public Utilities Commission accused the company of “failures in execution”, saying the utility must have a goal of restoring power within 12 hours instead of its current 48 hours, minimize the scale of outages and improve communication. The company did it because of dangerous wind forecast but acknowledged that its execution was poor. Its website frequently crashed, and many people said they did not know the power was going out. More strong gusty winds are expected Wednesday. Although gusts up to 35 miles an hour are forecast for parts of Shasta County, the northernmost area for the shutdown would be Butte County.
