Transient Suffers Burns After Camp Fire Escapes

A warming fire at an illegal camp site near the Sacramento River burned a homeless person who was sleeping next to it Tuesday morning. Just after 6AM, Redding Fire Department was called after an RPD Officer noticed a vegetation fire in the area of Parkview Avenue and Park Marina Drive. They found a large spot fire in a dry creek bed, which they contained to about a quarter acre. A camper had apparently fallen asleep and the campfire flared up in the dry, windy conditions. The victim was taken to a hospital, suffering from severe burns. The Redding Fire Department says they respond to illegal campfires almost daily, which are especially dangerous in red flag conditions.
