A puzzling and dramatic crash is under investigation by Redding Police and the CHP. At around 9:40AM Wednesday morning a car traveling on the Bluffs in Redding left Hilltop Drive near the Interstate Five overcrossing and flew onto the freeway below, landing in the southbound lanes. The small car was then struck by a pickup truck. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene, and he may have been dead before he even left the roadway, according to Redding Police Sergeant Mark Montgomery. He says there were no skid marks or other signs of braking or attempting to avert the course that took him through a chain link fence and over the edge. The driver of the pickup on the freeway was apparently uninjured. Traffic on Southbound I-5 was backed up for an extended time.
