Off-Duty CHP Officer Pepper Sprays Alleged Car Thief

A car burglary suspect prowled into a trap of his own making Saturday night and got an expected surprise. A little before 11PM, off-duty CHP Officer 37-year-old Justin Paul called 9-1-1 requesting RPD to his home in the area of Tiburon and Red Tail Drive. There was a man at his front door who he suspected of having broken into his daughter’s car elsewhere earlier in the evening. He said items taken from the car may have led him to the house to steal more goods. While waiting for Redding Police, Paul confronted the man to detain him, and when he tried to leave Paul pepper sprayed him. The man then ran away. When officers arrived in the neighborhood, someone told them they had seen a man run into a backyard on Peregrine. Chase the K9 picked up a track and led officers into another backyard and into an unlocked side garage door. 39-year-old Jeremy Carter was hiding in the rafters. He surrendered and was booked into jail for resisting, delaying, prowling and trespassing.
