Man Charged With Hate Crime After Incident At Redding Library

A man who arrived in Redding from Florida early this month has been charged with a hate crime after a fight with a security guard and others at the Redding Library. At around 2 O’clock Tuesday afternoon, 59-year-old Gill Gideon Bond was asked by an African-American man to leave the library grounds because he was drinking alcohol and being obnoxious. Bond responded by using a racial slur and threatening to kill the man, according to witnesses. That caught the attention of security guard Christopher Chaidez, who also asked Bond to leave. Bond reportedly pulled a knife from his pocket and held it down at his side while trying to punch Chaidez with the other hand. Chaidez tried to grab both of Bond’s arms and there was a struggle. People nearby tried to help Chaidez but Bond kept punching anyone who came close and shouting threats. RPD Officers arrived on scene and pepper sprayed Bond, then took him into custody. He was booked into jail for brandishing a weapon, assault, criminal threats, resisting arrest and a hate crime.
