Deputy Safely Negotiates With Suicidal Man Near Shasta College

A man with a gun caused some road closures while negotiating with a Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputy. At 3 O’clock Tuesday afternoon, the man was sitting in a pickup truck in a dirt lot at Collyer Road and Old Oregon Trail across the street from Shasta College. He was pointing a gun at himself and threatening suicide while refusing to get out of the truck. CHP, RPD, and Cal-Fire closed the surrounding roads while a deputy with the hostage negotiation team contacted the man on his cell phone to try and talk him down. He said he was armed with a 9 millimeter rifle and wanted to “Go down in a blaze of glory”. He eventually agreed to get out of the truck and he was taken for a mental evaluation. He had the rifle with ammunition and a semi-auto pistol next to him as well as two more rifles in the bed of the truck.
