Traffic collisions became nearly overwhelming Tuesday in their sheer numbers in the Redding area as drivers demonstrated less than appropriate judgement for the extreme conditions. The surrounding foothills and mountainous areas are coated with snow. Interstate Five is currently closed to all northbound traffic at Fawndale 10 miles north of Redding. There are various chain requirements on Highways 299 and 44. Drivers should check with Cal-Trans online or at 1-800-GAS-ROAD before traveling to higher elevations. Cal-Trans will be suspending all the major road construction projects in the area for the Thanksgiving holiday, but the reduced speed limits will remain in effect.
